With all of the sweeping tax law changes just signed into law for 2018, when will your firm be updating their EA training books?

We are getting this question quite a bit these days. Here is how the Enrolled Agent Exam works:

The Enrolled Agent Exam (series of 3 tests) is always based on the taw law from the most recent tax season. For example, the current exam is based on 2016 tax law. The current testing season began on May 1st, 2017 (right after everyone finished doing taxes for the 2016 tax year) and will end on February 28th, 2018 (right as everyone is starting to do taxes for the 2017 tax year). The next testing season will begin on May 1st, 2018 and run thru February 28th, 2019. The questions will be based on 2017 tax law. The sweeping tax law changes just signed into law for the 2018 tax season, will not end up on the Enrolled Agent exam until the May 2019 - February 2020 testing season.

Our materials are always published in mid-March for the next testing season. As of this writing, they will be for the May 2018 - February 2019 testing season. Again, these materials will be based on the 2017 tax law.
